Planned Workouts API for Running Workouts

BigGiraffe5 days ago

Hey guys! My name is Guilherme. I run an app with functionalities similar to TrainingPeaks, specifically focused on running.

This means I rely heavily on both Garmin’s Workout and Activity APIs today.

Our core business is generating personalized running sessions for athletes based on their device data. Integrating separately with Garmin, Coros, Samsung, etc., is a technical effort we prefer not to maintain long term.

However, before switching 100% to Terra, I’d like to understand how mature the Planned Workouts API currently is.

Can I fully create structured running workouts with repetitions on Garmin, Apple Watch, Coros, and Zepp through Terra?

Thanks!

Hi Guilherme! Terra's Planned Workouts feature can help consolidate your integrations :)

For writing planned workouts, Terra currently supports for example:

Garmin ✓ Coros ✓ Hammerhead ✓ Apple ✓ and a few others!

From January 14, 2026, our Garmin planned workouts now support REPS. This enhancement specifically addresses strength-based exercises and allows you to specify the number of repetitions for each step. This makes Garmin a strong fit for your structured running sessions that may include repetition-based components.

For Apple Watch, Terra provides planned workout support through the Mobile SDK (iOS Swift). You can create structured workouts with steps, durations, targets (like heart rate and speed), and intensity levels. The workouts become available in the user's Workout app on their Apple Watch.

Workout Structure: Terra's planned workouts consist of a series of steps, where each step includes:

  • Completion criteria (duration) - distance, energy expenditure, heart rate threshold, etc.
  • Targets to maintain - heart rate, speed, grade, etc.
  • Intensity labels - Warmup, Active, Cooldown, etc.
  • Exercise type - Running, Cycling, etc.
  • Sub-steps

This structure allows you to describe any workout as a series of defined segments! Hope this helps :)

Hi Vanessa, thanks so much for the quick reply!

Just so I’m 100% aligned: With Terra’s Planned Workouts, we’ll be able to create structured running workouts with repetition blocks on both Garmin and Apple Watch, such as:

10’ @Z2 + 8 × (2’ @Z4 + 1’ walking) + 10’ @Z2

Meaning: • 10 minutes at an easy intensity • A repetition block containing 8 repeats of: • 2 minutes at higher intensity (Z4) • 1 minute low/recovery • Then a 10-minute cooldown

Am I correct that this structure can be built (with nested reps) and pushed to: Garmin, Apple Watch (using your iOS SDK), and Coros?

Any plans of expanding to Zepp (Amazfit) anytime soon?
